Call for Papers
Material Dante: Books, Bodies, and Beyond
2026 Annual Symposium of the Dante Society of America
April 10–11, 2026
Biblioteca Nacional de México, Mexico City
The 2026 Annual Symposium of the Dante Society of America will explore the materiality of Dante: the tangible, visual, and physical dimensions through which his works have circulated, been read, and reimagined across centuries and cultures, as well as the representations of materialities within his texts. Held at the Biblioteca Nacional de México, one of Latin America’s most important repositories of cultural memory, this gathering seeks to foster new conversations on how Dante’s legacy is shaped through books, manuscripts, images, and collections.
We welcome proposals on topics including, but not limited to:
- The history of reading and annotating Dante’s works
- Collecting Dante: private and public libraries, special collections, and curatorial practices
- Dante in visual translation: illustration, painting, sculpture, and digital visualization
- Rewriting Dante across languages and media
- Bibliographic and codicological approaches to Dante manuscripts and early printed editions
- Representations of material culture and material practices in Dante’s texts
Papers may be presented in English, Italian, or Spanish. We particularly encourage submissions from scholars based in Mexico and Latin America, and are committed to creating an inclusive and collegial space for exchange among international Dante scholars and students.
Please submit an abstract of no more than 300 words and a short biographical note by October 15, 2025 to Alejandro Cuadrado (a.cuadrado@bowdoin.edu) and Natale Vacalebre (natale.vacalebre@uah.es)
Upcoming Events
The second Annual Graduate Student Conference, "Dante’s Other Worlds: Art, Language, and Imagination," takes place on 9/27/25 at the University of Notre Dame.
The double roundtable on Women Scholars in Dante Studies will be held online on Thursday October 2 and Thursday October 16, 18:00–20:00 CET/12.00-2.00pm EST.
Across these two sessions, contributors to the special forum in Dante Studies will present and discuss their ongoing research. The roundtables will also provide an opportunity for collective reflection on key issues such as gender imbalance in the scholarly community, women’s perspectives on male-authored poetry, and related topics.
The event is open to all interested participants. To receive the Zoom link, please register using this form.
